Research potential song: Olly Murs - Back Around

One of the songs we have chosen to look at for our music is Back Around by Olly Murs. This song does not have a music video to it which would make it appropriate for our music video.

I can feel the memory in my brain
I can feel the cold running through my veins
Like it's been, been this way, all of our life
Looking in the mirror through your eyes
Nothing makes sense, these tears won't dry
I let you down, down and out, never thought twice

But that was then
And this is now
I know I said I never, but I know I let you down
And it feels dead, in this town
So tell me when will you bring love back around
Bring love back around
Love back around

Funny how you never quite realise
That you already have paradise
Til it's gone, all the way, out of your life
Looking in the mirror, don't know myself
Nothing makes sense, this feels like hell
I let you down, down and out, never thought twice

But that was then (that was then)
And this is now (this is now)
I know I said I never, but I know I let you down
And it feels dead, (it feels dead) in this town (in this down)
So tell me when will you bring love back around
Love back around
Bring love, oh love, oh love
Bring love back around, yeah
Back around, (bring love), oh oh
Oh, love love love
Bring love back around, yeah

Who can I touch? (there ain't nobody)
Who can I trust? (there ain't nobody)
Who can I love? (there ain't nobody)
If it ain't you, you, you
Who can I touch? (there ain't nobody)
Who can I trust? (there ain't nobody)
Who can I love? (there ain't nobody)
If it ain't you, you, you

But that was then (was then)
And this is now (this is now)
I know I said I never, but I know I let you down
And it feels dead, (it feels dead) in this town (in this town)
So tell me when will you bring love back around
Back around
Bring love, your love, your love
Bring love back around, yeah
Back around, (bring love), oh oh
Oh, love love love
Bring love back around, yeah
Your love back around

Our Group has to thoroughly look through the lyrics to make sure that there are enough shots we can take to coincide with the lyrics. we also will have to apply for copyright from the OCR exam board.

Research: Music Video Analysis 1 Pink- Funhouse

The music video I have chosen to research is Funhouse by Pink. The instrumentation of guitar riffs and drum rock beat suggests its a pop rock video. The costuming, tattoos and props like the motorcycle suggest this also.
Shots

Pink uses close up shot of the picture frames to indicates a bad memory she has. The lyrics are "pictures framing up the past" which suggests that she is trying to forget about it as its on the floor and a couple of seconds later she throws the frame to her left.

The video also constantly dolly's. This creates a mode of address for audiences as it wants you to think that she is taking us back to her old life.

Relationship between lyrics and the video

All of the shots relate to lyrics of the shot. Some examples are "spinning all around" and "dancing all around" When these lyrics are sung, she dances and spins around.

Another lyric that is significant is "It used to be a fun house, but now its full of evil clowns. Again referring to bad memories and the idea of a children's funhouse where clowns and mirrors exist. There is also ambient lighting used. The dark grey smoke shows the evil.

There is also a relationship between the music and visuals. As the lyrics are quicker the ALS is increased. However, when the song goes into a sort of blues feel the ALS is decreased.

Pink tends to use voyeuristic costumes in all of her videos. She wears them to get a message across.

The video is part of two types of music video. It is a performance based video as thee is a lot of singing into camera and an on stage shot.

The video also is telling a story about her past relationship and that she wants to burn all of her memories. This all part of Goodwin's music video analysis.

In this video pink can be seen in center frame for the majority of the video however she can be seen in the left and right of center frames occasionally entering stage left when she appears vulnerable due to lyrics.

How this has influenced my creativity and planning

  • learn't how to relate lyrics and visuals
  • received ideas of different shots I can use in my video

Research: Institutions 1: MTV

How this research has influenced my creativity

  • This has helped me to develop my understanding of how institutions change with society.
  • This helped me understand the history of an institution and how they play a large role.
  • This has helped me think more about which institution I will consider to promote my own music video.
