Research: Music Video Analysis 6 Olly Murs - Right Place Right Time

Olly Murs is a British singer who rose to fame after competing in the X Factor in 2009. The Video was released in 2013 and was produced by Steve Robson. In the video Olly can be seen wearing trending clothes. This is so that his video appeals to a young audience. This also coincides with the genre as Dance - Pop is a genre that is originated with youth culture. This is related to Hodge and Kress's theory "genres change and new genres are developed when situations in society and new situations begin to occur". The video falls into the Narrative and performance as it is all about Olly's life on tours.

Relationship Between Lyrics and Visuals

Olly sings the words "life line". This shot could suggest that Olly's music is the most important thing to him as in the medium shot shows the recording studio. He is also right of frame which shows he isn't the important object in the shot.

"Being at the right place the right time" shows olly signing a record deal and his journey of the X-Factor. This shows that he just happened to being the right place at the right time for his career to take off.

In this shot Olly is scene on set as one of his other music videos. This is a good promotional aspect for the record label as it promotes his other songs. he lyrics are "i'm hanging on for dear life" which refers to the music industry being a hard industry to keep either a popular artist or in at all.

Relationship Between Visuals and Music

Each shot cuts on the beat of the music and as the tempo of the music increases, the speed of the cuts increases. Most of the shots are quick however, the audience is able to see everything in the video.

There are many instrumentation illustrations in this video. This allows the audience to look into the life of Olly Murs.

Promotional Aspects

As well as featuring some of his other videos, it also features close ups and of the artist to allow the audience to recognise the artist.

There are also shots of him fooling around which again shows the audience his personality and goes against Dyer's Theory of Star Image. The record label have allowed him to be himself.

Research: Goodwin Theory

Performance

A performance video is a music video that shows the artists performing to camera. This can be singing into camera or through a live concert performance. The record label will use singing to camera as a way of promoting the artists and allows the audience to see who the artist is. In this shot the artist is looking into camera and singing to the audience as if they are the camera. However, a connotation of her expression is that she is angry and fierce.

Narrative

A Narrative music video is a video that tells a story. It can also include the story line of a film like Geri Halliwells It's Raining Men which includes the movie Flash Dance and Fame.Using film references is called intertextuality.

Concept

A concept based video introduces the idea of a historic movement. For example in the video of Salute by Little Mix the is the idea of powerful women and feminism. In this the shot it shows how the female is dominating. This is against the stereotypical female character. There is also the concept that women are not there to be pushed around anymore and society has moved on.

Research: YouTube

How this has influenced my creativity and planning

By researching YouTube, it has helped me to consider the different options I have for marketing my music video and allowed me too know more about YouTube itself. I also got a better idea of the type and age of audience YouTube targets or pull in. It hasn't helped me because it only allowed me to think about two aspects of my music video and not a variety of things.

How this has helped my creativity and planning

This has helped me in my planning as it has allowed me to think about different costuming and shot types. It has also made me think about the genre characteristics of my chosen genre and what my story line will be based off of.

Research: Music Video Analysis 2 Black Eyed Peas - Where is the Love

The song I am researching is "Where is the Love" by the Black Eyed Peas. The genre of this song is R&B and is in the style of performance and concept based.

There are many features of this video especially that relate to Goodwin's Conventions.

Looking into camera is one of Goodwin's conventions. Viewers like close ups of the artists as it allows them to see who the artist is. This is very important in a promo video especially artist trying to establish a fan base. In the past, artist close ups were for members of the audience that weren't able to get to concerts.

Matching Music and Lyrics

There are threelyrics and shots that stand out for me. The first one is the lyrics "Where is the Love". When these lyrics are sang, the majority of the time there are close ups of a red question mark on a black piece of paper synchronized with the lyrics. This shows views that questions about society are constantly asked and the black background on the sign could symbolize the bands name and the segregation between black people and white in America today.

The second is when the words "negative media" are sung. The shots of the TV screens suggests that the media are a bad thing and always manipulate stories etc.

Finally, one of the sequences shows one of the members of the band pushed onto the bonnet of the police car. This is synchronized with the lyrics "feeling under".

Throughout the video, there are jump cuts that are on each beat of the song. There are some actions, handheld and steady cam. The fast ASL shows the speed of the song and each shot last for approximately 1-2 seconds.

Genre Characteristics of R&B include specific hand gestures, certain costumes like black tracksuits, jeans, vests and nearly all of the clothes are black. The Black Eyed Peas go against some stereotypes in this video because the colour black is mainly associated with evil or bad. However, in this video they are on the good side and trying to stop or fight evil.

Concepts

The question mark is a symbolic and iconic which has multiple meanings. This means it is polysemous. The Black Eyed Peas try and get us to question how we act and behave and what effect that has on our children.

Genres that feature in this video are future, science fiction and religion

How this helped my creativity and planning

I liked the way close ups of the artists were used which allowed us to see all of the singers. shots I will consider using in my video are high angle shots, long shots, ELS, CU, MCU, Establishing shot, hand held cam, blur effect, frame positions and tracking.

I will find it difficult to access large urban environments and famous buildings, crane shots and flying cam.

I liked the idea of using pieces of paper with writing on them. I also liked how they got the community involved.
